Although relief may be the initial reaction, it is not unusual for women and men involved in an abortion experience to later encounter side-effects. These side-effects may arise days, months, or even years later. Symptoms may include:
- emotional numbness
- substance abuse
- eating disorders
- high-risk behaviors
- relationships problems
- difficulty bonding
If you are hurting from an abortion experience, Bridgehaven is here to listen and to walk with you through the healing process. We offer support groups, one-on-one mentoring and a healing retreat called Rachel’s Vineyard. All are led by advocates who have had, and healed from, their own abortion experiences. These services are open to both men and women.
If you have questions or would like to register for an upcoming class, please contact Haley Brimmer, our Director of Client Advocacy via email or by phone at 319-364-8967. All inquiries and conversations are confidential.

About the Retreat
Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat program that offers healing to any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of abortion. The retreat is a chance to get away from the daily pressures of work and family to focus on a painful time in life and to begin healing. Many experience an initial sense of relief after their abortion. Later, however, emotional problems can surface that may include depression, anger, flashbacks, emptiness, anxiety, and unresolved grief. Rachel’s Vineyard provides an opportunity to release repressed feelings in an emotionally safe environment. Through the retreat your soul can find a voice and transform the pain of the past into love and hope.
A Rachel’s Vineyard retreat is designed for ten to twelve participants. It is deferential and respectful. It is never confrontational. The retreat begins on Friday evening and concludes Sunday around noon. Lodging for two nights, meals, and materials are included in the registration fee. Registration must be received at least two weeks before the scheduled retreat.
