The moment she walked out of the abortion clinic she felt it. Deep within her gut, rising into her chest making her heart race at thought of what she had just experienced, heard, endured…done. Did she just do that? Did she really just swallow that pill? A pill that would stop the growth of her pregnancy, ultimately killing the life inside her. The regret was oppressive and kept her in a state of confusion and disorientation.

Hours later, she took a chance that there might be something she could do. What does one do when inquiring about the unknown? Yep, they Google it. She typed in her wonderings and there it was. Was this for real, was it possible? Could what she just did be undone?

These words are a retelling of a combination of recent testimonies clients have shared about the moments after they took the first pill in the chemical abortion (abortion pill or RU-486) protocol. In Iowa the number of chemical abortions is on the rise. From 2018 to 2019, the number increased by 24%. Now, with this option being more readily available, we expect that number to rise at a much faster pace. We also expect many of these decisions made with haste and under extreme pressure to be immediately regretted.

That is where we come in. Bridgehaven offers Abortion Pill Reversal, or also called Abortion Pill Rescue (APR). This option is a possibility for a woman who has taken the first of the two pills in a chemical abortion, mifepristone. Mifepristone is a progesterone blocker, affecting the continuation of the pregnancy. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours later, the misoprostol pills are taken. This will cause cramping and bleeding that expels the baby.

Given that there is a window of time between the two pills when the baby is still alive, the APR protocol can be administered after a woman takes that first pill, but time is of the essence. Clients must get to us as soon as possible to complete a pregnancy test, conduct an ultrasound scan and, if viable, to get started on progesterone under the guidance of our Medical Director. With an approximate 65% success rating, the APR protocol is an attempt to save the baby, but it’s not a guarantee.

It’s rare that we see the opportunity for second chances; however, the Bible is filled with stories of them. We see second chances as a do-over or a chance to make it so that “thing” never happened at all. But God provides second chances in the form of a rescue. He steps in, provides the way from our lost selves, and allows us opportunities to start walking in a different direction, away from sin and death.

We have seen this play out over the past few months. Our first APR journey was a beautiful unraveling of a second chance for not only this little one but for a mom and dad, too. We have seen them flourish through this grace-filled rescue. God has used Bridgehaven, the people and the resources to show them a new way, a new hope for their family’s future.

No matter the outcome, we are here. Always ready to catch the broken and lead them with love and grace to the cross. To a love that has no end.

“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23
